Contending Brouhaha in Choosing Oyo Town Imamship

The Oyo Imamship is the highest and most revered spiritual position within the Muslim Ummah (community) of Oyo town. It serves as a sacred channel of leadership guiding Muslims towards Allah and stands as a symbol of Islamic authority in the land.

However, for more than two years since the demise of both the late Alaafin and Chief Imam, the position of Imam in Oyo town has become a subject of contention, stirring divisions and fueling disputes among the contenders.

It is well known in Oyo that the supreme authority and final decision on the appointment of a new Chief Imam rests with His Imperial Majesty, Oba Akeem Abimbola Owoade, the Alaafin of Oyo.

A few months ago, all the concerned contenders underwent a series of screening exercises, after which reports indicated that the final documents had been submitted to the appropriate authority for approval and subsequent announcement. However, about a week later, some online bloggers prematurely announced one of the contenders as the new Chief Imam of Oyo. The responsible and recognized quarters swiftly dismissed this claim as false and misleading.

This false announcement, though incorrect, raised public expectations that the official pronouncement was imminent since the misinformation itself arose from the prolonged delay in the official declaration.

The Muslim Ummah of Oyo finds this persistent delay disheartening and urges the concerned authorities to act swiftly and decisively in announcing the rightful and duly chosen Chief Imam.

This year marks two years since the passing of the late Chief Imam, Dr. Mashud Abdulganiy Ajokidero, and the expectation across Oyo town remains high. The Muslim community hopes to soon wake up to the joyful news of a new Chief Imam being officially appointed.

It is indeed worrisome and disheartening that the Muslim Ummah of Oyo has remained without a clear spiritual head for this long. Considering that Muslims constitute about 80–90% of the town’s population, it is imperative to maintain unity and prevent unnecessary division among the faithful.

We, therefore, use this medium to appeal passionately to the appropriate authorities to treat this as a matter of urgent importance and to take the necessary steps towards the immediate and rightful selection or appointment of the new Chief Imam of Oyo.
