Betrayal in Ibadan North Bye-Election and APC Plan for Party Unity Ahead of 2027 By Oyewusi Matthew
The Ibadan North bye-election has now come and gone, all stakeholders in the APC are reeling from the shocking defeat and disunity rocking the party and needless to say there will be so much to be put in place to set the divided house in order ahead of 2027.
Last saturday’s election was marred with intrigues and abrupt betrayal, which some reckon was a vengeance of the sequence of events leading to the 2023 election Guber loss of the APC to Engr Seyi Makinde. We all know the story.
Some sect of the APC in the state will be looking back at the result of the Ibadan North bye-election with lots of regrets while others will rejoice on another poor outing for the party on another election date which according to them further opens up the unending discord in the party.
Many of the APC leaders and party stakeholders did not even come out to vote for the party candidate while some of us are aware that some leaders told their loyalists in their various wards to vote for the PDP all in a bid to further express their grievances and disappointment within the party.
While some of the serving PDP lawmakers, leaders and party stakeholders were on the field canvassing for votes and support on election day, some of the APC leaders were even donating fund towards the success of the PDP candidate.
Our intelligence gathered that the party leaders in several wards even replaced loyal party and candidate’s agent names with another list of disloyal members who completely varnished into thin air on the election day especially in their various polling units. Dedicated party agents were surprised not seeing their names on the list of party agents.
The interesting part is that this scenario also transpired in the PDP because some poliing units had no agent for both parties after they allegedly allocated huge sums of money to each unit, however it was more disastrous for the APC as the party obviously lacked cohesion and unity of purpose.
A house divided against itself cannot stand. Internal conflict will take nobody anywhere either now or come 2027. The equity maxim that states thus – ‘He who comes to equity must come with clean hands’ is a wise saying for all APC stakeholders and leaders in Oyo State that as 2027 arises it is the collective responsibility for all leaders to stop apportioning blames, look inward and ask yourselves if you are also blameless in this whole crisis which begun in 2018.
It is only imperative that all concerned will make ample effort to unite all warring factions because come 2027 another Guber loss spells a dearth of any opposition in Oyo State with massive degeneration in building a strong political system, future progressive leaders and youth development.
