Is Nigeria Truly Independent?

IMG-20241001-WA0017-1-300x300 Is Nigeria Truly Independent?

Nigeria got her independence October 1st 1960, hence need to ask if truly Nigeria and Nigerians are independent

A country is considered independent when it has sovereignty, meaning it has the absolute right to govern itself and make decisions without interference from other countries or external authorities. I will be X-raying some of the factors that make a nation independent:-

SELF GOVERNANCE : The ability to create and enforce its laws, without external influence . Has Nigeria not been influenced by other countries?

TERRITORIAL INTEGRITY: Control over its borders and territory but in our own case, our territory has been taken over and controlled by Boko Haram and Fulani Herdsmen.

POLITICAL AUTONOMY: Freedom to choose its political system, leaders. We practice democracy here in Nigeria, if I may ask, does our votes counts during elections ? Is INEC truly independent as it should be ?

ECONOMIC INDEPENDENCE : Ability to manage its economy, resources, and trade, with the current economy, can we hit our chest and say we have been able to manage our economy ? What about our resources? We are blessed with natural resources by God, did God make a mistake by giving us these natural resources?

INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION: Diplomatic recognition by other countries and international organizations. What do other counties think of us? How are we being treated by other nations who are not even up to Nigeria ?

MILITARY SOVEREIGNTY : Control over its armed forces and defense. Nigeria army which was well known for grand fighting and gorilla fighting have been reduced to nothing by our political class, Nigeria military only do well when they are on foreign missions..

CULTURAL IDENTITY: Preservation of its language, customs, and heritage. As of today, we no longer teach our kids our languages in schools , cultures and others, our political class have succeeded in dividing us along tribal lines, religious lines etc.

In conclusion, the national orientation agency needs to be more empowered to work effectively and at this point in our nation history, there is a need for urgent national stakeholders conference where every sector will be carried along, we need to sit and champion a way forward, drafting a new constitution if possible that will protect each citizens, tribes and religion.

MAY NIGERIA SUCCEED
