SSANU EAUED Condemns Arrest of FUOYE Union Leaders, Calls for Justice
The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Emmanuel Alayande University of Education (EAUED), Oyo, has expressed strong solidarity with the leadership and members of SSANU, Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) Branch, following the reported assault, arrest, and unlawful detention of its union leaders by officers of the Nigeria Police Force in Ekiti State.
In a solidarity statement made available to SpyGist Media and signed by Comrade Ayotunde J. Fabeku, the EAUED Branch Chairman, the union condemned the incident in its entirety, describing it as “a grave violation of freedom of association” allegedly orchestrated by the Vice-Chancellor of FUOYE, Professor Abayomi Fasina.
“We condemn this action in its entirety because it is a grave violation of freedom of association and must be totally condemned by every reasonable and sane mind,” the statement read.
The statement commended the National Leadership of SSANU, particularly the National President and the National Vice President (Western Zone), for their prompt and decisive response, which led to the occupation of the Ekiti State Police Command Headquarters by union members demanding justice for their colleagues.
The EAUED branch also appreciated the solidarity and swift intervention of SSANU members from Ekiti State University (EKSU) and Bamidele Olumilua University of Education, Science and Technology (BOUESTI), Ikere-Ekiti, describing their unity and support as a “beacon of hope” during the trying moment.
Furthermore, the statement acknowledged the Governor of Ekiti State for ordering the immediate release of the detained FUOYE union leaders upon receiving reports of the incident, which it described as both “unfortunate and barbaric.”
Reaffirming their unwavering support, the EAUED branch assured the FUOYE union leaders of total solidarity and commitment to the pursuit of justice.
“FUOYE Branch Chairman, Secretary, and other comrades, we want you to know that we are solidly behind you. Your struggle is our struggle, and we will not rest until justice is served. Stand strong, comrades!” the statement concluded.
