SPYGIST EXCLUSIVE: Tinubu Reportedly Sacks INEC Chairman, Cites Concerns Over 2027 Ambition
President Bola Tinubu has reportedly directed the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, to immediately proceed on terminal leave, in a move said to be linked to concerns over the 2027 general elections.
According to exclusive sources, the directive followed a crucial meeting between President Tinubu and Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma. The governor is said to have raised alarms over Yakubu’s recent activities, which he allegedly described as capable of undermining the President’s re-election bid.
Sources close to the presidency revealed that Governor Uzodimma specifically accused Yakubu of attempting to register new political parties and of covertly supporting a governorship candidate in Imo State. These actions, the governor reportedly argued, were “disrupting the President’s preparations for a second term.”
The directive has already sent shockwaves through the electoral body. As a result, INEC has reportedly suspended key official engagements, including its final quarterly meeting with political parties and a planned session with civil society organizations.
This development sets the stage for a major leadership shake-up at INEC. Prof. Yakubu, who was first appointed by former President Muhammadu Buhari on October 21, 2015, is now expected to vacate his office, paving the way for President Tinubu to nominate a new chairman for confirmation by the National Assembly.
Although neither the presidency nor INEC has issued an official statement on the matter, the reported directive signals a significant shift in Nigeria’s electoral landscape, with far-reaching implications for the country’s political future.
