Osun Gov’ship Election: Party Candidates Sign Peace Accord
Candidates of Political Parties in the Osun governorship election have signed a peace Accord, as they pledged their commitment to peaceful electoral process in the state.
The Convener, National Peace Committee, Bishop Hassan Kukah charged the candidates and politicians to see the signing of the accord as a commitment to democracy, adding that Nigeria desperately needs a peaceful environment
Fifteen Governorship candidates are participating in Saturday’s governorship election.
Candidates present in this hall have all pledged their commitment to a peaceful governorship election.
Convener of the National Peace Committee, Bishop Hassan Kukah says Nigeria desperately needs a peaceful environment hence the need to encourage political actors to think towards commitment to peaceful governance.
He maintained that Violence is a fundamental threat to Nigeria’s democracy and government has the key to put an end to it.
Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission,INEC, Professor Mahmood Yakubu and Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi held that the success of the peace accord depends on all stakeholders.
Representing the Inspector General of Police, DIG Johnson Babatunde Kokumo assured that security agencies would remain apolitical, and will guarantee a level playing field for all.
One after the other, candidates stepped forward to append their signature to the peace pact, as they pledged to abide by the commitment made in ensuring a peaceful election on Saturday
They also promised to talk to their supporters on the need to avoid violent acts and embrace peace in the remaining days to the election.
