Exclusive Report: 16 Nigerian Military Officers Detained Over Alleged Coup Plot
Sixteen senior officers from the Nigerian Army, Navy, and Air Force have been arrested over an alleged plot to overthrow the Federal Government. The suspects, ranging from a brigadier general to junior officers, are currently being held under military intelligence custody in Abuja pending investigation.
The report, obtained from Premium Times, details the names, service numbers, backgrounds, and previous postings of the detained officers, with Brigadier General Musa Abubakar Sadiq identified as the suspected ringleader.
Profiles of Detained Officers
- Brigadier General Musa Abubakar Sadiq (N/10321)
Born on 3 January 1974, from Nasarawa State, Sadiq is a member of Regular Course 44 of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA). He trained between 1992 and 1997 and currently serves in the Infantry Corps.
He previously commanded the 3rd Brigade in Kano and the 81 Division Garrison, Lagos. In October 2024, he was detained over alleged diversion of rice palliatives and sale of military equipment.
- Colonel M.A. Ma’aji (N/10668)
A Nupe native from Niger State, born on 1 March 1976, and a member of Regular Course 47. The infantry officer trained from 1995 to 2000, serving as Commanding Officer of the 19 Battalion, Okitipupa. He played a key role in Operation Crocodile Smile II and was suspected to be the plot’s strategist.
- Lt Colonel S. Bappah (N/13036)
Born on 21 June 1984 from Bauchi State, a Signals Corps officer from Regular Course 56, trained between 2004 and 2008.
- Lt Colonel A.A. Hayatu (N/13038)
From Kaduna State, born 13 August 1983, a Regular Course 56 infantry officer.
- Lt Colonel P. Dangnap (N/13025)
From Plateau State, born 1 April 1986, also of Regular Course 56. Court-martialed in 2015 alongside 29 others over alleged misconduct in the Boko Haram campaign.
- Lt Colonel M. Almakura (N/12983)
Born 18 March 1983, from Nasarawa State, infantry officer, Regular Course 56.
- Major A.J. Ibrahim (N/13065)
Born 12 June 1987, from Gombe State, infantry officer, Regular Course 56, promoted to captain in 2013.
- Major M.M. Jiddah (N/13003)
Born 9 July 1985, from Katsina State, infantry officer, Regular Course 56.
- Major M.A. Usman (N/15404)
Born 1 April 1989, from FCT, infantry officer, Regular Course 60, trained between 2008 and 2012.
- Major D. Yusuf (N/14753)
Born 26 May 1988, from Gombe State, of the Ordnance Corps, Regular Course 59, trained between 2007 and 2012.
- Major I. Dauda (N/13625)
Born 26 November 1983, from Jigawa State, infantry officer, joined via Short Service Commission Course 38, trained 2009–2010.

Captain Ibrahim Bello (N/16266) – Born 28 July 1987, Short Service Commission Course 43.
Captain A.A. Yusuf (N/16724) – Army Captain, details undisclosed.
Lieutenant S.S. Felix (N/18105) – Army Lieutenant.
Lieutenant Commander D.B. Abdullahi (NN/3289) – Navy officer.
Squadron Leader S.B. Adamu (NAF/3481) – Air Force officer.
Security sources indicate that the arrest followed weeks of surveillance and intelligence gathering after reports of suspicious communication among some officers. Investigations are being coordinated by the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA), with all suspects currently held at a secure facility in Abuja.
This is not the first time Nigerian military officers have been accused of coup plotting, as several attempts in the past have led to purges within the armed forces.
