Following the announcement of increase in the students’ fees by the management of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso in Oyo State, the National Association of University Students (NAUS) has urged the students to adjust with the current situation of the economy by exploring alternative financial options.
The tuition fees which was increased by over 60% has generated reactions from students and the general populace.
Addressing journalists at a press briefing on Friday, Vice President of the National Association of University Students (NAUS) in Southwest, Comrade Tiamiyu Olayinka Principle said the body has committed so much before reaching conclusion with the management of the institution.
Reacting on the tuition fees hike, the NAUS Vice President dissociated his office from initial agreement on the increments, describing it as inevitable considering the current economic reality.
Tiamiyu advised students of the institution to bear with the tuition fees hike and explore other means like students loan.
“While we acknowledge the challenges posed by this increment, we urge our members to bear with the changes. We encourage the exploration of alternative financial options, such as student loans, to mitigate the impact on households and personal spending”, he said.

PRESS STATEMENT
UPDATE ON LAUTECH TUITION FEE NEGOTIATIONS
As the Vice President (Southwest) of the National Association of University Students (NAUS), I am pleased to announce that our negotiations with the management of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) have concluded and through the thick and thorns, we are able to dissuade them on many grounds.
In our October press statement, we informed the student populace about our ongoing negotiations with LAUTECH management. Working alongside NAUS CMC OYO, NANS JCC, and other student leaders, we successfully secured a revised tuition fee structure.
Initial proposal of 170% ₦283,500 increment and ₦351,000 for indigene and non-indigene respectively. We therefore make conscious effort to reduced to 60%:
– ₦168,000 for indigene
– ₦204,000 for non-indigene
– Increment applies only to 300L-600L students.
– Our proposal aimed to reduce fees further, but external factors influenced the final agreement
While we acknowledge the challenges posed by this increment, we urge our members to bear with the changes. We encourage the exploration of alternative financial options, such as student loans, to mitigate the impact on households and personal spending.
As a takeaway, our team raised concern over the long overdue student union election. We demanded that the Student Union should be resuscitated as this will serve to give genuine voice and concerns of the students can be articulated. The management agreed to return the student union. We are hoping the election will be conducted by the first semester upon student resumption for the 2024/2025 academic session.
For emphasis sake, my office is in no way in agreement with the increment but adjusting to the current reality and economy, the increment is inevitable thus, we have no option but to flow with the current.
My office remains open to diplomatic communication and assistance. We prioritize student welfare and well-being, ensuring that the majority of students do not face undue difficulties during payment.
We appreciate the resilience and understanding of our members. Together, we shall navigate these challenges.
Thank you.
God bless.
Viva Aluta…
Comrade Tiamiyu Ibraheem Olayinka
VICE PRESIDENT (NAUS SOUTHWEST)
