Press Release
Ogbomoso’s Neglect: Dilapidated Roads, Unfinished Projects, and the Plight of Commuters
Ogbomoso, Oyo State, 19th October, 2024
As we all gathered here today, this is a stark reminder of dilapidated nature a sting on our daily life. Over the years, Ogbomoso road has been a haven for commuters who are stretching towards north and southwest. Due to this strategic location, the road is one of the most busy roads across the nation. Despite this glaring reality, the lives of many have been lost due to the negligence of authorities to renovate this road. All the lives lost on this road is not an accident but a murder. The office of Vice President NAUS Southwest will no longer fold arms to these despicable actions and deliberate genocide by the federal government.
The National Association of University Students (NAUS) and the Ogbomoso Indigenous Associations, Youth, and Ogbomoso Community jointly condemn the deplorable state of infrastructure in Ogbomoso, particularly the road within the community and Ibadan to Ogbomoso road. This road has served as a paradise for commuters when the alternative project initiated years ago is yet to be completed. The remains 5-kilometer stretch remains incomplete, posing severe risks to commuters and residents. Thus, this road still remains the only viable road to the South from the north. As a result of the deplorable nature, the motorist has to seek an alternative route which is going to the heart of Ogbomoso town.
Residents have grown weary of promises, watching as their town’s potential withers away. The neglect has far-reaching consequences, affecting not only residents but also businesses and the local economy. Not limited to the residents, Ogbomoso hosts one of the largest University of Technology in the country (LAUTECH) therefore our students are endangered everyday. They leave home very early in the morning without hope of returning home because of some people’s negligence. This is utterly disgusting and unacceptable.
Ogbomoso’s strategic location as a connecting point between major roads connecting Southwest to Northern corridor makes it a vital economic hub. However, poor infrastructure hinders trade and commerce, causing economic hardship for residents. The area’s renowned agricultural produce is also affected, as farmers struggle to transport their goods to markets. Educational institutions, once beacons of hope, now operate amidst crumbling infrastructure.
We demand immediate action from the Federal Ministry of Works and relevant authorities. Complete the Ibadan-Ogbomoso Road project, repair and maintain existing roads, and provide relief to affected businesses and residents.
We issue a 30-day ultimatum to the government to address these concerns. Failure to do so will lead to mass protests and demonstrations, economic shutdowns, and escalation to national and international forums. We will not rest until our demands are met.
The people of Ogbomoso have suffered for too long. We will not be silenced. We urge the government to prioritize the welfare and safety of Ogbomoso’s citizens and commuters. NAUS will not tolerate a single life of our members lost to this road or any road whatever.
We appreciate the effort from the Soun of Ogbomoso, Park Managers, Security Operatives and many others who make today’s demonstration a success. This is just the beginning of our struggle and we will forge ahead to scream into government ears until our demands are meant.
Freedom cometh by struggle!
Viva Aluta…!
COM. TIAMIYU OLAYINKA IBRAHEEM PRINCIPLE.
NAUS SOUTHWEST VICE PRESIDENT.
