Eleruwa Palace Reacts to AGF’s Response, Criticizes Announcer as a “Meddlesome Interloper”
The Palace of the Eleruwa of Eruwa has reacted strongly to reports surrounding a petition forwarded by the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) to the Oyo State Attorney General, insisting that the move was a routine legal procedure and not an indictment of the monarch or his ascension.
In a press release made available to SpyGist News and signed by the Director of Media and Public Communications, Sunday Adedokun, the palace dismissed claims of court disobedience, stressing that the AGF’s office only acknowledged receipt of the petition and directed it to the appropriate authority in line with constitutional provisions.
“The letter from the Federal Ministry of Justice, dated July 22, 2025, merely acknowledged receipt of a petition and, in line with established legal frameworks, directed the petitioners to the Oyo State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice. The Federal Attorney General has no jurisdiction over chieftaincy disputes, which are strictly state matters,” the statement clarified.
The palace also took aim at Mr. Sola Abegunde, who publicly announced the petition. It described him as neither a prince nor a stakeholder in Eruwa’s traditional institution, dismissing his involvement as unwarranted and misleading.
“His persistent involvement in matters concerning the Eleruwa stool is both unwarranted and misleading, driven by a penchant for sensationalism and divisive commentary,” the statement read. The palace further accused him of exploiting sensitive issues for personal gain and warned the public not to be misled by his claims.
Reaffirming the legality of Oba Samuel Adebayo Adegbola Ajobo Olurin I’s ascension, the palace stressed that the process was conducted in full compliance with the laws of Oyo State. It added that the state government, under Governor Seyi Makinde, acted within its lawful authority throughout the installation.
The palace expressed confidence in the judicial process and urged all parties to allow the courts to handle the matter without unnecessary public distractions.
Concluding the statement, the palace appealed to the people of Eruwa to disregard inflammatory statements and focus instead on peace, unity, and the development of the community.
Sources within Oyo State’s legal and chieftaincy circles also confirmed to SpyGist News that, under Nigeria’s federal system, traditional ruler matters are primarily state-level concerns, handled by state governments through their Ministries of Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters.
