CAN Asks Buhari To Order Immediate Rescue Of Methodist Prelate, Two Others

The leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has condemned the abduction of the Prelate of the Methodist Church Nigeria, His Eminence, Samuel Kanu Uche and two others in string terms and called on President Muhammadu Buhari to give an express order to the security agencies to free them immediately and stop the incessant abduction of clerics under his watch.

Uche was reportedly abducted on Sunday along Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway, in Umunneochi Local Government Area of Abia State along with Rt. Rev. Dennis Mark, the Methodist Bishop of Owerri and the Prelate’s Chaplain by unknown gunmen.
If a great Servant of God of Uche’s calibre could be kidnapped like a three-year old baby on a major road without any resistance from the Police, it speaks volume of what our security architecture has become.

Not fewer than 10 clerics have been kidnapped this year alone and none was rescued by the security agencies and in two instances, the victims were killed by their captors!
This is no more a country one can be proud of. Recently, the government was boasting of securing some helicopters to fight the terrorists and other criminals in the country. We are yet to see the impact. The Police that boasted that it would be patrolling the Abuja- Kaduna road have not fulfilled their promises.

We, once again, call on President Muhammadu Buhari to overhaul this failing security architecture with a view to injecting security operatives into the system in order to stop this menace of insecurity. It is our hope that the President will restore sanity to the polity by making it safer and better secure as he begins his last year in office. If the trend continues, it means the history and the unborn generation will be remembering him as the President who failed woefully to protect lives and property of the citizens.

To those who are holding these Servants of God, we appeal to them to let go of them because they are not responsible for whatever reasons that made them criminals. We call on Christians and other well meaning Nigerians to join us in praying for their releases immediately.
